Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) is underway and ongoing nationwide in The Gambia. It began on May 29, 2021 and will stop on July 11, 2021. Registration centres are open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Sunday.
Of course, before registration could commence, Electoral Services International Inc. (ESI) had to deliver the BVR hardware, software, and human-ware essential for the project launch. Successfully delivering the exercise materials was not without its challenges during these extraordinary times, especially considering the worldwide shortages of plastic, microchips and more.
In the first week of voter registration, from May 29, 2021 to June 4, 2021, nearly 200,000 eligible Gambians registered to vote. This should represent approximately 1/5 (20%) of the total Gambian populace who will be 18 years of age by December 4, 2021.
The Gambian 2021 BVR project is off to a great start. It is also important to note that ESI’s job is not done when registration closes on July 11th. In fact, far from it. ESI will be supporting the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for months to come, likely until September 2021 onsite and offsite after our in-country presence come to an end.
Together, ESI and the IEC have many more project milestones on the timeline to achieve before this exercise is over. We look forward to providing more BVR updates on ESI’s website @ https://esi-sei.com/.
