On April 17, 2024, the South Pacific nation of Solomon Islands held its first nationwide synchronized elections for Parliament, seven provincial assemblies, and the Honiara City Council. Over 420,000 voters were registered to vote at 1,200 polling stations spread over 249,000 nautical square miles.
The 2024 joint elections were the first in which Solomon Islands synchronized the National General Election for Parliament with provincial assemblies and the Honiara City Council elections. A Constitutional amendment delayed the election by many months and extended the dissolution of Parliament to December 31, 2023. As previously posted on ESI’s website, the government stated that a primary reason for the delay was to avoid holding the Pacific Games and national election in the same calendar year.
A round of applause please! The joint elections could not have taken place without the hard work and dedication of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission. ESI had intimate knowledge of the events surrounding the preparation for the 2024 elections since ESI partnered with the SIEC for their voter registration (biometric) in advance of the big day. ESI and the SIEC have been working together for over 10 years. Credit is due to the whole team!
